Cannabis Social Clubs

It is a private space where adults who use cannabis meet, usually with some form of membership and house rules. There is no legal definition of one in South African law and no register of them, so the term means whatever each place has decided it means. Read every listing as a description of how that venue presents itself.

There is no licensing or registration regime for them in South Africa, so there is no permit for a club to hold. What the law protects is private personal use and cultivation by adults; sale and dealing remain criminal offences. Every venue in this directory is independent, sets its own terms and is responsible for its own compliance — we publish what each one tells us about itself. Law stated as at 20 August 2026.

It has neither of their systems. Spanish clubs operate as members-only non-profit associations under a different legal tradition, and Thailand licenses retail dispensaries. South Africa licenses neither, and has no lawful way to buy cannabis at all. What South African law protects is private personal use and private cultivation by adults — nothing commercial.

A South African court has looked at exactly this. In Haze Club v Minister of Police [2022] ZAWCHC 269 the Western Cape High Court considered a company that cultivated cannabis for its members and held that adults are not stopped from growing for themselves — only from outsourcing that right to somebody else. An appeal was lodged and then withdrawn in November 2024, so that judgment stands. Put any such arrangement to an attorney before you enter it.

In private, between adults, and with nothing of value changing hands — that is what the law protects. Supplying cannabis for any benefit is dealing under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, and dealing has never been decriminalised. The Cannabis for Private Purposes Act, passed but not yet in operation, defines "consideration" very widely: any compensation, gift, reward, favour or benefit.

Expect a private space with its own rules: a door policy, an age check, and often a members-only sign-up before you get past reception. Some are quiet lounges, others are closer to a bar without alcohol. Every venue sets its own terms and can turn anyone away.

That is the club's decision, and many require every guest to sign up in their own name first. Ask before you arrive rather than at the door — a club that turns your friend away is applying its own rules, not ours.
